The coming week should begin to feel more like summer, with temperatures mostly in the 60s. Those hoping for a dry weekend will be disappointed to learn that rain is expected from Saturday through Monday. The total may approach an inch, which is welcome after the dry conditions of recent weeks. Beyond that, another stretch of fair weather appears likely. I noticed the first black flies at sunset this week and was obliged to retreat to the weather tower before finishing work on my new garden. They appear to have arrived in good health.
Around town, the politicians are busy. I have lost count at least once, but believe there are six candidates for sheriff, four for register of deeds, two for clerk of court, and two for auditor. Former Representative J. Adam Bede recently spoke on the prospect of a waterway connecting Grand Marais to the ocean. While the subject was the seaway, it was his humor that seemed to carry the evening.
News also arrives that two canvas signs, forty feet wide and six feet high, are to be erected at the east and west entrances to Grand Marais along the highway. I imagine they will soon discover politics.
While I would not presume to offer advice to candidates from atop the weather tower, Marcus Aurelius once wrote, “If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it.” It is good guidance for public office. It is also good guidance for weather forecasts, though considerably harder to follow.
