WEATHER RADIO IN GRAND MARAIS BUZZES TO LIFE
GRAND MARAIS, Minn., Aug. 25.—After several months of delay, WGMW, Grand Marais' new weather broadcasting station, has gone on the air with Olaf Thorvaldsen, village weather observer, at the microphone.
The station began its regular weather service at noon Monday, when Thorvaldsen, speaking in his customary calm manner, forecast fair skies and temperatures in the 70s, followed by increasing clouds and a chance of rain. A trace of rain was recorded Wednesday morning.
Thorvaldsen, who was born near St. Paul, formerly served as weather observer at Van Hook, N.D., before accepting the Grand Marais appointment in January. His unusual accuracy in predicting weather along the North Shore and in the interior of Cook county has earned him the unofficial title of "weather prophet" among Grand Marais residents.
WGMW is expected to broadcast a fifteen-minute program each weekday at noon, consisting principally of weather forecasts and warnings for fishermen and others traveling on Lake Superior, together with items of local news.
